Fire
Department

"When called, the volunteer fire department will to the best of it's ability protect life and property in the
Town of Berwick. The Fire Department will always implement the
latest technologies in the fire service."
Garrett
Guillot, Fire Chief
To the Good People of Berwick,
It gives me great honor to address you as your Fire Chief.
My name is Garrett Guillot. I have been with the Volunteer Fire Department since 1986. I have served under former Chief V.J.
Bella and former Chief Ray Rasberry. These two men have big shoes to fill, to say the least.
As your Fire Chief, I want the citizens of Berwick to realize we are a
VOLUNTEER Fire Department. What this means is that we do not have totally manned fire stations.
Yes, the Berwick Volunteer Fire Department does have one man during the day at the Central Station. Our mission is to provide the best Fire protection possible.
To protect life and property to the best of our ability.
The fire department has always prided itself with the latest in fire fighting technologies.
This does not come without a cost. Again, I want the citizens of Berwick to know that their Fire Department is Volunteer.
When you need us on a cold January morning, it's volunteers that leave their homes to go out and protect the citizens of Berwick WITH OUT PAY.
This is the only organization that does not choose its group of people to serve.
You see a fire does not choose just the poor, or just the rich, it does not choose the best sections of town.
Fire can strike anyone, it does not choose because of political association.
This is why I think this is the best volunteer organization to belong to.
It takes all kinds to make up the organization to protect EVERYONE segregating NO ONE.
Sincerely yours
Fire Chief
Garrett Guillot

We are entering
into a time of study through the Berwick Recreation Board when
we will have an opportunity to establish a long range plan for
recreation in our town.
The Berwick
Recreation Board is comprised of six (6) members. They are
Mackie Bourg, Linda Thomas, Mary Gray, Lisa Norris, Lori
Patterson, and Mark Landry.
Hattie Lawton was
recently appointed Recreation Director. Hattie will organize
meetings and agendas of the Board to attempt to determine the
needs for our community now and for the future. They will seek
information from our citizens. There is a form attached to this
issue. We encourage you to make suggestions and post comments
about what you would like to see this committee explore as
possibilities to enhance recreation in Berwick.
The word
recreation means a restoration to health, to create anew,
restore and refresh. A means of refreshment or diversion from
work; a hobby.
|
The Board will
seek to build on programs we have now, with improvements to
facilities and even the possibility of other facilities, all
with the goal of serving not only the young but the seniors, men
and women, boys and girls. Another goal will be to inventory the
assets of other nearby communities so these would not be a
duplication of efforts. Some facilities are barely getting by
now and if we build something newer, we may both suffer.
After the Board
has done this work, they will present the report to the Council
for approval and funding.
This project
along with the ongoing revitalization effort of downtown Berwick
will enhance our town and make Berwick---
A Great Place to
Live.

Walking
Trail Sign
|

|
Our
area now has a new sign at the entrance to
South Berwick pathway extension.
There
is also a wide range of recreation programs and facilities available in Berwick for all
ages. Recreation is not just hitting, bouncing or kicking a ball, even though it is
very important. If you don't think so, just ask the at littlest ball player
how big a deal it was to get their first basket. Recreation is walking,
jogging, in line skating and bike riding. Your tax dollars provide the coverings
over the stands at the games parents and grandparents attend when their little one is
playing Dollars also provide the practice fields, back stops, walking trails and
parks we can all enjoy at our leisure.
However all of the parks
and fields would be empty without the support and hard work of the volunteers who really
make it happen.
Berwick has been blessed with parents,
grandparents, brothers, sisters, uncles and aunts who work real hard to make of our youth
programs successful. I can not even attempt to name all of you good folks who work
so hard so kids can participate but you know who you are.
Thank you very much from
all of us. Volunteers are another reason that Berwick is a great place to live.

Here is a little
test for all you parents of children playing in the sports programs in Berwick. This
applies to coaches as well. You don't have time to look up the answers but here
goes.
Who was the most
valuable player in professional football, baseball & basketball in the years 2002,
1998, 1994, and 1992?
What teams won the
respective championship game in each sport in each year named?
Who was the coach of
the year in those sports in that year?
How many have you
answered? Here is a better question -- how many of you care?
Well of course by
now you have probably guessed that this is a bogus test. Although there are
certainly winners of each category in each year named, it is obvious by the number of
correct answers that we really don't have much interest in who won. We probably remember
great plays or significant events of each year but winners and losers fade from memory as
time goes on, and for some reason our sports memories in general are relatively short.
We should do
everything we can to make the games our kids are involved in fun for them. These
memories will be worth a lot when the years pass and all that is left of them is memories.
